The Global Ocean Race 2013/14. What is it all about?

The Global Ocean Race 2013/14 is a round the world yacht race for 40’ race yachts. It starts in northern Europe in September 2013 and races around the world in 3 legs. 1 boat, 1 crew, 7 months and 30,000 miles

Having spoken to many companies over the years about sailing sponsorship, it seems that those that do get involved almost always stay (such as G4S since 1992), and record an ROI in excess of 500%, some many times more. As I'm sure you will agree (and already know), sailing supporters show a larger proportion of CEO's, MD's and decision makers than any other sport and over 80% are AB1's with a higher than average household income. A great target market for any company. This type of sponsorship is also unique in that the sponsor and their clients can actually experience it, unlike football or motorsport - sailing on a grand prix ocean racing yacht is very unique and only experienced by a few. You can't play football with the team, or drive the racing car, but you and your clients can sail the yacht. Once a client is onboard the yacht, they become a captive audience for the day.

Some media information has just been published from the recent Route du Rhum race from France to the Caribbean. Over half of the 87 entries were Class 40's - an incredible sight. The race village, full of boat sponsors marquees saw over 1.2 million people through the gates in the 7 days prior to the race - a great marketing opportunity. By contrast, only 102,655 people attended the 10 day London Boatshow last year! Less than 10%
